This makes it extremely important for inland vessels to be able to sail unobstructed on the Rhine. But when entering summer season, low water levels are a frequent occurrence. How can a vessel remain operational for longer with shallow draft? A configuration with a tunnel system might be the solution, such as our Flex Tunnel system. The retractable Flex Tunnel increases water inflow towards the propeller. Herewith, the risk of not being operational during shallow water periods can be significantly reduced. The plug and play steering gear can be retracted and deployed by a single push of a button in the wheelhouse. The system is flexible in use and does not create resistance when it is not operational. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53WQ5WOeIMo&embeds_euri=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.damenmc.com%2Fen%2Fnews%2F2022%2Fa-retractable-tunnel-configuration&source_ve_path=MjM4NTE&feature=emb_title Recent news

A significant part of the works was the complete overhaul of its twin rudders and steering gear. The 89.5 metre, 5,401 GT vessel is operated by the UK’s Natural Environment Research Council and entered service in 2006 to replace the ageing RRS Charles Darwin. Her role is to undertake a wide role of oceanic and atmospheric research activities from the equator to the polar icecaps using the latest equipment and sensors. As such, she spends extended periods at sea in all weathers with teams of scientists and researchers on board. Following an assignment in the South Atlantic, the RSS James Cook arrived at DSAm. As part of the two-week maintenance programme her flap rudders, designed and built by Damen Marine Components (DMC), were given their first complete overall in 15, very active, years. The rudders were removed from the vessel and taken away to be fully disassembled and inspected. Parts showing wear were overhauled, including the worn-out rudder stocks.Excellent manoeuvrability DMC’s Barke® flap rudders are specifically designed for ships engaged in activities such as research, fishing and dredging that require excellent manoeuvrability along with first-rate fuel economy. Their progressively rotating flaps generate high lift forces at large rudder angles and low drag at small rudder angles, delivering the necessary performance in all situations. The enclosed linkage system also provides overload protection and eliminates the risk of sand, ice and floating objects entering the rudder assembly. DMC successfully completed the service project within the two weeks available and the flap rudders are now as good as new once again. The next assignment for the RRS James Cook will be participating in a project researching the processes that form and preserve minerals of strategic importance to the transition to low-carbon societies. But wherever she is in the world in the future, she will be able to access Damen’s global network of Service Hubs for repairs to her rudders as well as any other systems that require repair or maintenance. With the Service Hubs spread across five continents, the Natural Environment Research Council can be confident that their key maritime assets will be assured of maximum uptime and availability from the Arctic to Antarctica. The Mombasa shipyard was built there, a brand-new shipyard for which DMC was asked to supply the necessary winches, including controls. The delivery included one of the first electronic winch systems under DMC’s brand name DMC Dynamics; an extensive assignment with the necessary challenges, about which we want to tell you more. Slipway winches The shipyard has a slipway where the ship to be docked is lifted. It is then transversely moved to one of the repair facilities. The slipway, with a capacity of 4,000 tons, consists of three platforms that are lifted and lowered with a winch system. Depending on the size of the ship, the platforms can be used separately or coupled. Each platform is moved by four winches, making a total of twelve winches on the slipway. Each winch is equipped with a 90 kW E-motor. The total capacity of the installation is therefore more than 1 megawatt. All twelve slipway winches are controlled from one central operating position which is located in the control room. The energy released when a ship is launched via the slipway is absorbed by large braking resistors and each winch has its own braking resistor. Because the weight of the ship is slowed down by the winch, regenerative energy is released which must be absorbed. Because the winches are operational in Kenya, we opted for external braking resistors; these only convert the released energy. The electrically driven slipway winches each have their own starter box with frequency converter. Along with the E-motor, they are built into a container, or a housing, which we have mounted on the winch and all winch foundations have such a housing. Because we have built all electrical components in a container, they are better protected against weather influences. It also makes it easier to carry out maintenance. Safety Reliability and safety are very important in these types of applications. We faced several challenges in that regard. The biggest challenge was that power failures in Kenya are the rule rather than the exception. The issue is that slipway winches are equipped with a fail-safe brake. This means the brakes are activated as soon as the energy supply is lost. However, especially during the launch of a ship, it is dangerous to apply the brakes suddenly, because there is a chance the ship will fall off the platforms. Therefore, it is important to bring a ship to a controlled stop. That is why we have supplied a separate emergency power supply for each winch. In the event of a power failure, the batteries of this emergency power circuit ensure the ship is brought to a safe stop. Another safety measure is that all winches are designed with excess capacity. This means the other three winches can finish the job if one winch fails. Top cradle system In addition to the slipway winches, DMC…

This type of nozzle gives more thrust at low speeds, which is ideal for fishing. The Maartje Theadora was built in 2000 as a freezer trawler for Parlevliet & Van der Plas, the biggest fish-processing company in Western Europe. The 140-meter-long vessel has large freezer rooms where fish is frozen immediately after it has been caught and cleaned. This means that a freezer trawler can stay longer at sea. After more than twenty years of active service, the original 19A nozzle looked ready to be replaced. The nozzle, which has a diameter of 4,340 mm and a propeller diameter of 4,300 mm, was recently replaced by its exact equivalent at the Damen Shiprepair Amsterdam shipyard. The Maartje Theadora is already back in service again. Complex operation It was a complex operation, according to Kees Oevermans, technical sales manager at Damen Marine Components in Hardinxveld-Giessendam. “The nozzle weighs 18 tonnes, and it’s a challenge to get it exactly in the right position underneath the ship. But everything went well, and the end result looks very neat.” The modification was preceded by sound preparation. Says Oevermans: “We want to make it as easy as possible for the customer and the installation yard. That’s why we always stay involved in a project from beginning to end. As soon as the customer gives the assignment, we’ll consult with the yard to find the best and most efficient way to install the nozzle. This way we prevent later unforeseen issues from arising. In the end, this pays off both for the yard and for the customer.” Positive effect A nozzle has a positive effect on the performance of a fishing vessel. A ship that has its nets in the water during fishing, is affected by resistance and needs more thrust. At the lower speeds that the ship maintains while fishing, the nozzle can generate more thrust. Added benefits are reduced fuel consumption and lower CO2 emissions as a result. The Maartje Theadora is not the first modification project of Parlevliet & Van der Plas in which Damen Marine Components is involved. In 2017, the Jan Maria’s nozzle was replaced for this customer, and two years ago, both nozzles on the Margiris were replaced. Oevermans concludes: “A good relationship has developed over the years. We enjoy working together, and all parties are satisfied with the collaboration.” Recent news

Damen Marine Components (DMC) will supply Flex Tunnels, propeller nozzles, manoeuvring systems and rudders for two innovative inland tanker vessels to Rensen-Driessen Shipbuilding (RDS) from Zwijndrecht, the Netherlands. On Tuesday May 17, Wim Driessen from RDS and Leo van Zon of DMC, signed a contract at the Maritime Industry exhibition in Gorinchem, the Netherlands. The newly developed tankers by RDS are based on the series of four large ‘XXL Inland Tankers’ that have been built between 2017 and 2020. The new tankers will be equipped with each two Flex Tunnels, two Optima nozzles and two complete steering systems including four rudders, steering gear and controls. Propellers of a large two-meter diameter have been selected, which provide efficient propulsion under all circumstances. The Flex Tunnels under the hull ensure optimal water flow to the propellers. The wings that construct the duct under the hull in front of the propellers, can be retracted up towards the hull and extracted to create the tunnel. When the tanker navigates on deep water with a full load, the tunnels can be retracted in the hull, as the propellers will be fully submerged to generate thrust. On shallow water and with limited draft, the tunnels can be deployed, so the water will flow under the hull towards the propellers, that will still be fully submerged in the flow towards them. This allows to uphold operations at quite low water levels This concept has proven successful: 13 vessels with Flex Tunnels are operational and seven more are under construction.Wim Driessen from RDS and Leo van Zon of DMC Asymmetrical rudders The new XXL tankers will be equipped with two propellers, two Optima nozzles, and two HD-rudder systems. Each set of connected rudders has an asymmetrical 60 – 80 degrees rudder angle, that generates optimal thrust. Even at very low speed, excellent manoeuvring capabilities are ensured. Maximal deadweight To be able to take as much liquid as possible in the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp sailing area, the vessel measurements are impressive. With 135 meters length, and 22 meters beam, the vessels are categorised as XXL. The performance of earlier XXL tankers, providing 13000 deadweight, are very promising. New customers at RDS therefore chose for this vessel concept. Innovative Like the earlier XXL tankers, the new vessel design is developed by RDS together with Rommert Ship Design and completed for improved efficiency by DMC. Knowledge gathered in earlier projects was applied. The cooperation between the yard and DMC is outstanding, resulting in state-of-the-art vessels. “Working with these suppliers has enabled us to optimally develop new ships,” says Wim Driessen. “Thanks to working with DMC we can further improve our industry network and integration of ship systems, to perfectly serve our clients.” Area sales manager Leo van Zon adds: “We like to thank RDS for the long standing and pleasant cooperation and…

Full spade rudders with asymmetric leading edge and bulb in the wake of the propeller to further enhance flow along the rudder and reduce turbulence, will enable considerable fuel savings for the six new 7,100 TEU container vessels that Asiatic Lloyd aims to take in operation from early 2023. Damen Marine Components (DMC) will provide one Atlantic Rudder for each vessel. These rudders are known to cause minimal drag thanks to their slim design. For these container vessels, Asymmetric Rudder Technology (ART) will be applied in the design of the leading edge of the rudder. A rudder bulb in the wake of the propeller axis further improves the hydrodynamic properties of the rudder configuration. The Singaporean shipping arm of AL Group Asiatic Lloyd has ordered the six 7,100 TEU feeders at Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co, the yard will deliver six vessels during 2023 to 2025. Length between perpendiculars of the four identical vessels is 255 meters, with 42.8 meter breadth, 14.5 meter design load draught and a design speed of 21.4 knots. Damen will provide the tailor designed rudder for each one of the vessels, measuring 61 square meter and generating 3300 Kilonewton meter of torque. As the propeller in forward thrust has a fixed rotation direction, the asymmetric leading edge will improve the water flow by directing the turbulent water along the rudder blade more efficiently. The propeller wake directs the flow, so it does not come in from straight forward. Even more hydrodynamic optimisation is achieved by the bulb. In the wake of the propeller axis, turbulent water can circle and cause vibrations in hull and rudder. The rudder bulb is positioned right behind the centre of the propeller and eliminates this turbulence to create a better flow along the rudder blade. This reduces ship’s resistance in the water, and it also improves torque of the rudder when it turns. A stable and directional water flow generates more thrust than turbulent water. The advanced rudder technology adds to the sustainable ambition of the shipowner and charterer to operate vessels that cause minimal emissions. The choice for ammonia as a propulsion fuel expresses this ambition. Reducing drag, exemplified by the application of ART Atlantic Rudders with Bulb allow further fuel and emission savings. “We will be benefitting from this highly optimised and high efficiency rudder design by DMC in realising our goal of achieving vessel efficiency to the highest possible emission ratings” says Tonci Zdunic, Group Fleet Director, AL Group. “We are proud to have been selected by Asiatic Lloyd as partner for reaching their targets of improved operational efficiency and reducing the environmental footprint of their fleet” says Wim Knoester, Commercial Director of Damen Marine Components. The rudder was installed in a fishing vessel (58 x 13) and will be able to hold approximately 600 m3 of fish. Flap rudders are ideal for vessels that need higher manoeuvrability than usual at both high and low speeds. The additional side force the flap rudder delivers offers the opportunity to reduce the overall rudder area, while at the same time maintaining manoeuvrability. These types of rudders can be found on a wide range of ship types and sizes, from fishing boats and research vessels up to and including large container and other offshore vessels. Renewal can be performed during scheduled docking, hereby optimising service planning, minimising maintenance costs and assuring operational safety. BOSS™ Bearing Clearance Measurement (BCM) measures and displays the physical wear of the rudder carrier and neck bearings down to a single millimetre. This precision gives vessel managers plenty of warning of the risk of the bearing seizing up at some point in the future. The measurements are done by electrical wires (sensors) that measure the real-time distance between de rudder trunk and rudder stock with a 90° offset. The wires are routed inside the rudder trunk and shielded by protection pipes.Applying this feature reduces the risk of bearing damages to an absolute minimum. BCM is one of the essential applications to avoid open up inspections. Suitable for all ship types with a rudder system. Recent news

The initial contract for 10 vessels was awarded once again by propulsion specialist Brunvoll Volda, with whom DMC is working on this ongoing series. DMC will, once again, supply two Atlantic rudders and two Commander™ rotary vane steering gear systems. The Atlantic is a full-spade rudder with a surface area of eight square metres and steering gear torque of 110 kNm. It delivers excellent course-keeping, particularly on long-distance, straight line voyages. The Commander™ steering gear is likewise a dependable choice for long-distance, open ocean vessels. It has a simple, robust and compact design with just one moving part and a second-generation compact actuator for the smoothest rudder movements. Mounted inside closed housings, DMC’s advanced sealing technology prevents internal leakage and ensures a greatly extended seal life. The result is trouble-free operation for more than 60,000 hours between inspections. The DMC components are an integral part of the system supply from Brunvoll, consisting of gearboxes and propellers, rudders, steering gear, a tunnel thruster and control systems. The propulsion system is a twin-screw, diesel-electric configuration. “This is a strategically important contract for Brunvoll as it confirms our position as an integrated system supplier of propulsion, manoeuvring and control systems to the cruise segment,” says Geir-Arne Kaspersen, Vice President Sales of Brunvoll Volda. Mr Wim Knoester, Director Sales and Marketing at Damen Marine Components, added “We are glad that Damen Marine Components is part of the Infinity-class project. We are looking forward to continuing our relationship with our partners Brunvoll Volda and to completing the initial agreement of ten vessels.” Sunstone Ships specialises in the commercial management of passenger ships and is responsible for the buying, selling and chartering of its managed fleet. In line with its focus on the small ship / expedition cruise segment the Infinity class is 104 metres long, has a beam of 18 metres wide and a draught of 5.3 metres. They can accommodate up to 200 passengers and 115 crew members, and are built to Ice Class 1A, Polar Code 6 and Safe Return to Port specifications. Additional features include Ulstein’s patented X-BOW® design, dynamic positioning and zero speed stabilisers. Of the six vessels already ordered, the first, named Greg Mortimer, was delivered in September 2019 and is chartered to Aurora Cruises Australia. The next five vessels; the Ocean Victory, the Ocean Explorer, the Ocean Odyssey, the Ocean Discoverer and the Ocean Albatros are scheduled for delivery in, respectively, September 2020, February 2021, March 2022, September 2022 and October 2022. SunStone is also in negotiations for another five vessels of the same class due to extensive interest from the cruise industry. Recent news

These have been installed on nine 1,750 TEU Feeder Container Vessels built for a UK-headquartered ship owning and management company. The supply took place in three stages with a first contract signed by DMC and Cosco Guangdong in March 2017 for the immediate supply of three Atlantic rudders, plus an option on a further three. In June 2017 those options were exercised and a further three contracted by the shipyard, taking the total to nine. In November 2018 the outstanding options were also exercised and the last three rudders have now been delivered to Guangdong. The Atlantic rudder is a no-nonsense, ultra-reliable, conventional spade model. The version supplied to Cosco incorporates a bulb and DMC’s ART™ feature. This introduces a special layout that modifies the profile above and below the centreline of the propeller in such a way that the effects of the rotation of the propeller slipstream are mitigated. This expands the cavitation-free rudder angle and so reduces drag. This results in enhanced fuel economy and reduced cavitation. Other benefits include a water-lubricated synthetic bearing that is long-lasting and requires minimal maintenance, and the rudder is designed for easy dismounting when inspections and repairs are needed.“There are many rudder configurations on the market that can meet the guidelines for turning circles and zig zagging,” says Mr. Bogdan Mocanu, Area Sales Manager for DMC, “but are still not necessarily optimum for a given operational profile. For ships like container vessels, where the majority of steaming involves course-keeping, our Atlantic rudders (ART™ design) have exactly the right characteristics to ensure smooth, economical and reliable handling.” A statement issued by the Cosco Guangdong Shipyard management added; “The supply of the rudders has been a smooth and trouble-free experience. The cooperation has been excellent and the end-client is very happy with the performance of the vessels. We look forward to cooperating with DMC again in the future”. Delivery of the innovative, 164-metre, feeder container vessels began in Q1 2019. They are designed to meet the evolving needs of the container market where the increase in ultra-large container carriers together with the growth of specific regional markets means that there is a need for more feeder vessels. The contract was awarded once again by propulsion specialist Brunvoll Volda, with whom DMC is working on this ongoing series. DMC will supply two Atlantic rudders and two Commander™ rotary vane steering gear systems. Of the five vessels already ordered, the first, named Greg Mortimer, was delivered in September 2019 and is chartered to Aurora Cruises Australia. The next four vessels; the Ocean Victory, the Ocean Explorer, the Ocean Odyssey and the Ocean Discoverer are scheduled for delivery in, respectively, September 2020, February 2021, March 2022 and September 2022. SunStone is also in negotiations for another five vessels of the same class due to extensive interest from the cruise industry.10 September 2019 Damen Marine Components (DMC) has won a contract to supply a steering system for the trawler Cape Arkona. Official opening of new DMC headquarters The occasion also marked the introduction of Mark Visser as the company’s new managing director as current managing director Steef Staal prepares for his retirement after 15 years at DMC and a total of 46 years working within the Damen Shipyards Group. The new DMC headquarters were opened by Beer Damen, son of Damen Shipyards Group chairman Kommer Damen, with more than 350 invited guests including clients, suppliers, business relations and colleagues attending. Growth at DMC This opening speech was the opportune moment to respectfully thank DMC’s outgoing managing director Steef Staal, who will retire in February 2020. After 46 years working for Damen, it is an understatement to say that Mr Staal has contributed a great deal to the success of the Damen Shipyards Group over the years. Talking at the event, he said: “Wherever I go, I always head for the harbour to see if I can see any Damen vessels. I can spot them a mile off – and that’s a skill I’ll keep with me forever.” With the merger with Van der Velden Marine Systems in 2018, the acquisition of WK Hydraulics earlier this year and the establishment of Damen Winch Technology , DMC has undergone substantial expansion in recent years. The new headquarters serve as the workplace for a team of 100 personnel, and consist of new offices in addition to new production facilities. In-house expertise Complementing DMC’s production facilities in Poland and China, the new premises at Hardinxveld-Giessendam are equipped to carry out steel work and hydraulic assemblies. It also has a professional paint shop and a large warehouse for storage of all spares. The day also saw the official introduction of Mark Visser, who began his tenure as DMC’s new managing director on 1 October, after moving from Damen’s High Speed Craft product group. “DMC is not only a component supplier – we are a high-tech company with high-quality products and systems. Look at the developments we have made with the automation of steering systems, remote monitoring, and the first autonomous sailing projects. We have all this expertise in-house,” he said, clearly enthusiastic about the prospect of taking the helm at DMC. “And with modern vessels becoming more and more complex, components are becoming more important than the hull in which they are installed.”On the photo above (from left to right): Steef Staal and Mark Visser at Damen Marine Components Recent news

The hull with hull number 921 was built at shipyard Servernav, Romania. Recently, the HD rudders have been installed. Two years ago, the design for the Somtrans XXL was developed by Rommerts Ship Design B.V.. The ship has a size of 135 x 22,80 meters, a deadweight of 13.000 tonnage and is equipped with two independent drives with four hydrodynamic profile rudders, type HD 240. For extra propulsion of this large ship, the Flex Tunnel was also included in the design. The flexible tunnel ensures that sufficient water is brought to the screw, which gives the possibility of applying a larger propeller diameter (2.000 mm). The Flex Tunnel gives a significant resistance reduction in comparison to a fixed tunnel because this tunnel is retractable. The proven advantage of this is fuel saving. Recent news

Damen Marine Components Netherlands (DMC NL) has laid the first foundations for its new premises in Hardinxveld, the Netherlands. With capacity for approximately 80 people, the new buildings will be used for both offices and production purposes. With construction of the new buildings beginning as the first foundation pile was driven into the ground on the site of DMC former head office, the company’s motivations to build new premises were twofold. The first reason was to provide one working space for the greater number of personnel resulting from the merger of DMC and Van der Velden Marine Systems (VDVMS) earlier this year. Following the merger, the company has already incorporated the same administration system for all offices, says Damen Marine Components Managing Director Steef Staal. “But soon, with all Dutch personnel working at one location, we can really push forward with our long-term strategy.” To this end, the new premises will have capacity for the full array of disciplines; namely engineering, supply chain management, sales and support, project management as well as finance, HR and ICT. “And, of course, this also creates the conditions for team spirit and streamlined working relationships.”Growth potential The second reason to build the new premises was due to the sheer growth potential that DMC is witnessing. This market expansion includes the portfolios of both the original companies; DMC’s nozzles , and VDVMS’s rudders and steering gear. “However, there is room for growth too,” says Steef Staal. “This is why we are planning to expand our portfolio and introduce some new products.” In terms of architecture, the design of the new premises will clearly show the company’s connections to the Damen Shipyards Group. However, as Steef Staal explains, it was also important for the company to maintain a certain amount of its own identity. “Yes, we are a Damen company, but that doesn’t mean that all our contracts originate from Damen. On the contrary, over 80% of our turnover is actually non-Damen related.” Recent news

DMC and WK Hydraulics already overlap in areas such as steering gear and hydraulic power units, however WK Hydraulics also brings particular experience in the building of larger, customised hydraulic systems for winches, cranes, bow thrusters and other applications. The WK Hydraulics product portfolio additionally includes towing pins, wire and chain stoppers, and equipment to flush large hydraulic systems, which will be new to DMC’s current product range. However, these will fit in well alongside its core rudder, steering gear, winch and nozzle systems. DMC and WK Hydraulics have worked together on projects in the past, and in today’s highly competitive market the management of WK Hydraulics recognised the benefits of taking that relationship a stage further by becoming part of a larger entity. Its goal was to broaden its business model from being purely focused on hydraulic systems to becoming a supplier of drive systems in all their different forms. This required bringing in additional skills and resources in disciplines such as electronics and PLC technology, which could only happen if WK Hydraulics gained access to greater resources than it can currently command. This ambition in turn fits neatly with that of DMC to become a 'competence centre' covering the entire hydraulics sector. On the photo from left to right: Peter Kok (former Owner/Managing Director WK Hydraulics), Steef Staal (Managing director, Damen Marine Components) “WK Hydraulics will deliver on all its contracts under its own brand until the end of March,” says Peter Kok, its managing director. “After that, our product range will be sold under the Damen Marine Components brand name. The transition will be complete when we join the DMC team at its new facility at Hardinxveld, which is currently under construction. Support for users of our existing systems will continue without interruption.” Steef Staal, managing director of Damen Marine Components, added, “WK Hydraulics has always been an important supplier and indeed partner for Damen Shipyards. With DMC now moving to extend its product portfolio, we identified the need to enhance our capabilities in hydraulics and hydraulic-driven deck gear. WK Hydraulics is ideally positioned to fill that gap. We are very happy to welcome the complete WK Hydraulic staff and their skills and knowledge. We are looking forward to a successful future together.” Recent news

We design and manufacture a range of high-quality products and systems such as nozzles, rudder and steering systems, control and monitoring systems, winches and hydraulics. Improving vessel performance is our main purpose; we provide our customers with tailor-made solutions and excellent service. In 2019, we moved into a new office and production location in Hardinxveld-Giessendam, the Netherlands. The new premises was built after the merger with Van der Velden Marine Systems in 2018. After the merger more production capacity for our electronical and hydraulic manufacturing was required and we needed to house all our Dutch staff in one modern headquarter. At DMC we focus on quality and continuity; we are here to stay and aim to build lifelong relations with all our business partners. With our new headquarters we are ready for years to come. DMC’s marketing intern made an insightful video tour through our office. Allow us to give you an impression with this video. View all news items

DMC has grown from a very small shipyard established in Gorinchem in 1865, to become the largest nozzle builder in the world. Via a live satellite link, around a 1,000 customers, employees, suppliers and colleagues, at its three main locations in Hardinxveld (the Netherlands), Jiangyin (China) and Gdańsk (Poland), will toast this historic occasion simultaneously. Although DMC’s own roots were established in 1865 when Jan van de Giessen set up a business from a small wharf in the ‘Kalkhaven’, the history of shipbuilding in the area actually dates back to the 14th century. DMC itself was officially founded 10 years ago, when two Damen Group members were merged - Van de Giessen and Gdansk Engineering Works. GEW was actually the first company Damen Shipyards ever acquired outside of the Netherlands. Looking back over the years, DMC Managing Director, Steef Staal told the audience how, above all, he believes DMC’s success is because it ‘has become a partner to its clients, rather than just a supplier’. “We help our clients and work together with them.” Partner to customers Quality is paramount, he emphasises, both in terms of our products and in delivery times. “We have built up close relationships with our customers by delivering reliable quality.” He points out that DMC partners are mainly leading OEMs. Just in the last decade alone, DMC has nearly tripled its turnover to €36m and this has been possible due to Damen Shipyards’ willingness to invest in cutting-edge equipment and innovative production processes. DMC has three large spinning machines, which are able to manufacture nozzles up 7.5 m in diameter. “Perhaps there is another builder out there able to make these spectacular nozzles but I am not aware of it!” He adds that it is not just about the spinning machines alone but crucially, the novel manufacturing technique deployed, which means that nozzles are made with only a single weld on the inner side. As well as the vast range of top quality nozzles and rudders, DMC also manufactures shipbuilding constructions such as tailor-made stern sections for thrusters, crane foundations and crane arms. Winches added to portfolio And only recently, it added the production of winches to its portfolio. Rudders are already manufactured through sister company Van der Velden Marine Systems and winches too, have been in introduced through its new company ‘Damen Winch Technology’. Currently, Damen Shipyards is the main client for the towing winches for ASD Tugs. Following on from the celebrations surrounding the 150th anniversary, DMC is also set to celebrate again, as it opens a second major production site in China in Jiangyin on November 27. Damen has built this new production plant from scratch. At 11,000 sq m, the facility is nearly double its existing site at Suzhou. The facility will have its own spinning machine and state-of-the-art equipment including grinding…
