Efficiency is sustainability

Contributing to green shipping

Reduce emissions and operational costs by increasing efficiency; that’s our motto. Damen Marine Components has a reputation for developing solutions that enhance your ship’s performance.

Our goals are to:

  • Develop products that increase vessel efficiency.
Hence, shipowners benefit from reduced fuel consumption, emissions and operating costs.
  • Design and build products that have minimum impact on their environment.
  • Cooperate with partners and clients to help them increase their sustainable footprint.
  • Design products that have a minimal impact on marine life.

DMC’s Energy Saving Devices

DMC invests in continues product development, aiming to deliver incremental improvements in its range of Energy Saving Devices. We have a particular focus on equipment below the waterline, where reductions in water resistance can deliver serious environmental and economic benefits.

For example, DMC has developed low-drag and high-lift rudder profiles by using advanced materials. A rudder with a twisted leading edge exploits the propeller swirl to recover parts of the rotational losses and therefore allows for very low-resistance. Fuel savings of up to 3% can be realised. In addition, less wear on components lead to efficiency gains of up to 5%. The use of rudder bulbs, in combination with corresponding propeller hub cap arrangements, can further reduce the losses in the propeller hub vortices.

ROTOR MANOEUVRING SYSTEM

DMC’s Rotor Manoeuvring System (RMS) was developed as a safety feature, delivering extra steering power at the bow and so increasing manoeuvrability and providing thrust to overcome lateral wind forces. By increasing course stability it also reduces steering movements, thereby reducing resistance through the water and, as with our other solutions, yielding fuel savings.

FLEX TUNNEL

The Flex Tunnel is a retractable tunnel system for use in shallow waters when the propeller is at risk of not being fully immersed in the water. It creates less resistance compared to a conventional (fixed) tunnel system because of its ability to retract into the hull when not in use. More than 30 newbuild inland waterway vessels currently sail with Flex Tunnels.

HYDRO SPOILER

Another DMC innovation that boosts sustainability by increasing efficiency is the Hydro Spoiler. By placing a spoiler behind the propeller, exactly on the centreline, its curved blades intercept the water coming off the propeller and bend it from a swirling into a straight-outgoing flow towards the rudder. The Hydro Spoiler increases vessel efficiency by up to 5%.

RUDDER BULB

The rudder bulb (or Silent Bulb) is mounted on the leading edge of the rudder, positioned on the centreline of the propeller. By reducing the risk of cavitation, it reduces unavoidable flow losses from the propeller, making it more effective and reducing fuel consumption. It also reduces wear on the rudder. Over the years these have been fitted on more than 100 vessels, reducing their operational costs by 2%.

ASYMMETRIC RUDDER TECHNOLOGY (ART™)

DMC’s Asymmetric Rudder Technology (ART™) is a unique leading edge that is capable of being fitted to all adapted DMC rudders. The profile of ART™ is specifically modified to counter the rotation effects of the propeller slipstream, thereby reducing resistance and cavitation and so delivering a smoother water inflow. ART-outfitted vessels can achieve fuel efficiencies of up to 5%.
