The vessels are to be built by CSC Jinling Shipyard in China. The customised rudder will contribute in saving fuel during passages thanks to innovative design. The five 72,000 gross ton vessels feature 12 cargo decks on which they can carry 7000 vehicles. The carriers of nearly 200 meter long, 38 meter beam and 8.6 meter design draft are laid out for a design speed of 19.5 knots. These car carriers will be propelled by dual fuel diesel-LNG engines by a single propeller. Running on LNG, these vessels will be able to sail with considerable reduction of emissions as compared to conventionally powered ships. For each of the five identical carriers, Damen Marine Components (DMC) will deliver one rudder, that will allow for even more fuel savings thanks to optimised design. The customised rudder will provide 1450 kilonewton meter of torque, the weight is 46 tonnes, excluding the horn. Asymmetric Rudder Technology (ART) is based on advanced hydrodynamics. The asymmetric leading edge diverts the rotational effects of the propeller wake to enhance the flow along the rudder. This reduces drag and thus saves fuel. ART is often applied to the leading edge of the rudder blade, yet for the five PCTC’s also the horn of the rudder is asymmetric. This further optimisation of rudder design, enhancing fuel economy, is specially engineered for these vessels by the DMC design team. Bogdan Mocanu, Area Sales Manager at Damen Marine Components says: “We are very glad to have the opportunity of using our expert knowledge in designing the rudders for top performance, fully complying with the ship’s operational profile.” The five PCTC’s will be built at the China Merchant Jinling Shipyard under DNV class notation. DMC will deliver the rudders for the five consecutive carriers in the course of 2023 and 2024, in time for scheduled ship delivery from the yard. Recent news

Damen Marine Components (DMC) will provide one Van der Velden® Atlantic Rudder for each vessel. These rudders are known to cause minimal drag thanks to their slim design. For these container vessels, Asymmetric Rudder Technology (ART) will be applied in the design of the leading edge of the rudder. A rudder bulb in the wake of the propeller axis, further improves the hydrodynamic properties of the rudder configuration. Greek ship owner company Danaos Shipping ordered the two 7,100 TEU feeders at Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co, the yard will deliver these vessels during the second and third quarter of 2024. The vessels will be methanol fuel ready and will comply to IMO Tier III emission standards and Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) Phase III. Length between perpendiculars of the two identical vessels is 255 meter, with 42.8 meter breadth, 12 meter design load draught and a design speed of 20 knots. DMC will provide the tailor designed rudder for each one of the vessels, measuring 61 square meter and generating 3300 Kilonewton meter of torque. As the propeller in forward thrust has a fixed rotation direction, the asymmetric leading edge will improve the water flow by directing the turbulent water along the rudder blade more efficiently. Even more hydrodynamic optimisation is achieved by the bulb. In the wake of the propeller axis, turbulent water can circle and cause vibrations in hull and rudder. The rudder bulb is positioned right behind the center of the propeller and eliminates this turbulence to create a better flow along the rudder blade. A stable and directional water flow generates more thrust than turbulent water. The advanced rudder technology adds to the sustainable ambition of the shipowner and charterer to operate vessels that cause minimal emissions. The choice for a methanol ready design expresses this ambition. Reducing drag, exemplified by the application of ART Atlantic Rudders with Bulb allow further fuel and emission savings. “These vessels are at the forefront of new technology,” says Danaos CEO Dr John Coustas. “With this order Danaos will continue to maximise efficiency with a focus on creating value for our shareholders.” The two new container feeders add to the fleet of 71 container vessels, ranging from 2,200 up to 13,100 TEU (Twenty Foot Equivalent Unit – one standard container). “We are proud to have been selected by Danaos as partner for reaching their targets of improved operational efficiency and reducing the environmental footprint of their fleet” says Wim Knoester, Commercial Director of Damen Marine Components. A unique feature of this configuration is tension control, which calculates the right amount of force (torque) that is necessary to pull a torpedo to the surface. This is also called heave compensating: a technique used on lifting equipment to reduce the influence of waves. Fail-safe and redundant are two important characteristics of this configuration, which are also the requirements for the Multi-role Aviation Training Vessel (94 x 14 m) were it will soon be installed. This makes it extremely important for inland vessels to be able to sail unobstructed on the Rhine. But when entering summer season, low water levels are a frequent occurrence. How a vessel can remain operational for longer with shallow draft? A configuration with a tunnel system might be the solution, such as our FLEX Tunnel system. The retractable FLEX Tunnel increases water inflow towards the propeller. Herewith, the risk of not being operational during shallow water periods can be significantly reduced. The tunnel can be retracted and deployed by a single push of a button in the wheelhouse. The system is flexible in use and does not create resistance when it is not operational. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53WQ5WOeIMo&embeds_euri=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.damenmc.com%2Fen%2Fnews%2F2022%2Fa-retractable-tunnel-configuration&source_ve_path=MjM4NTE&feature=emb_title Recent news

This depends on our customer’s wishes and the available (entry) space of the steering gear room. With an unconfigured system, the parts, such as the cylinders, starter cabinets, hydraulic power unit, and the foundation are not yet installed and connected with each other, this is carried out once the parts have arrived. The systems in the photo are configured 'plug-and-play' piston-type steering gear systems. The advantages of this type of system are that it can be FAT tested beforehand and it allows for a fast installation process. A plug-and-play system is suitable for ships with a larger steering space, such as feeders, coasters, and dry cargo ships. Recent news

A significant part of the works was the complete overhaul of its twin rudders and steering gear. The 89.5 metre, 5,401 GT vessel is operated by the UK’s Natural Environment Research Council and entered service in 2006 to replace the ageing RRS Charles Darwin. Her role is to undertake a wide role of oceanic and atmospheric research activities from the equator to the polar icecaps using the latest equipment and sensors. As such, she spends extended periods at sea in all weathers with teams of scientists and researchers on board. Following an assignment in the South Atlantic, the RSS James Cook arrived at DSAm. As part of the two-week maintenance programme her flap rudders, designed and built by Damen Marine Components (DMC), were given their first complete overall in 15, very active, years. The rudders were removed from the vessel and taken away to be fully disassembled and inspected. Parts showing wear were overhauled, including the worn out rudder stocks.Excellent manoeuvrability DMC’s BARKE® flap rudders are specifically designed for ships engaged in activities such as research, fishing and dredging that require excellent manoeuvrability along with first-rate fuel economy. Their progressively rotating flaps generate high lift forces at large rudder angles and low drag at small rudder angles, delivering the necessary performance in all situations. The enclosed linkage system also provides overload protection and eliminates the risk of sand, ice and floating objects entering the rudder assembly. DMC successfully completed the service project within the two weeks available and the flap rudders are now as good as new once again. The next assignment for the RRS James Cook will be participating in a project researching the processes that form and preserve minerals of strategic importance to the transition to low-carbon societies. But wherever she is in the world in the future, she will be able to access Damen’s global network of Service Hubs for repairs to her rudders as well as any other systems that require repair or maintenance. With the Service Hubs spread across five continents, the Natural Environment Research Council can be confident that their key maritime assets will be assured of maximum uptime and availability from the Arctic to Antarctica. The Mombasa shipyard was built there, a brand new shipyard for which DMC was asked to supply the necessary winches, including controls. The delivery included one of the first electronic winch systems under DMC’s brand name DMC Dynamics; an extensive assignment with the necessary challenges, about which we want to tell you more. Slipway winches The shipyard has a slipway where the ship to be docked is lifted. It is then transversely moved to one of the repair facilities. The slipway, with a capacity of 4,000 tons, consists of three platforms that are lifted and lowered with a winch system. Depending on the size of the ship, the platforms can be used separately or coupled. Each platform is moved by four winches, making a total of twelve winches on the slipway. Each winch is equipped with a 90 kW E-motor. The total capacity of the installation is therefore more than 1 megawatt. All twelve slipway winches are controlled from one central operating position which is located in the control room. The energy released when a ship is launched via the slipway is absorbed by large braking resistors and each winch has its own braking resistor. Because the weight of the ship is slowed down by the winch, regenerative energy is released which must be absorbed. Because the winches are operational in Kenya, we opted for external braking resistors; these only convert the released energy. The electrically driven slipway winches each have their own starter box with frequency converter. Along with the E-motor, they are built into a container, or a housing, which we have mounted on the winch and all winch foundations have such a housing. Because we have built all electrical components in a container, they are better protected against weather influences. It also makes it easier to carry out maintenance. Safety Reliability and safety are very important in these types of applications. We faced several challenges in that regard. The biggest challenge was that power failures in Kenya are the rule rather than the exception. The issue is that slipway winches are equipped with a fail-safe brake. This means the brakes are activated as soon as the energy supply is lost. However, especially during the launch of a ship, it is dangerous to apply the brakes suddenly, because there is a chance the ship will fall off the platforms. Therefore, it is important to bring a ship to a controlled stop. That is why we have supplied a separate emergency power supply for each winch. In the event of a power failure, the batteries of this emergency power circuit ensure the ship is brought to a safe stop. Another safety measure is that all winches are designed with excess capacity. This means the other three winches can finish the job if one winch fails. Top cradle system In addition to the slipway winches, DMC has supplied…

This type of nozzle gives more thrust at low speeds, which is ideal for fishing. The Maartje Theadora was built in 2000 as a freezer trawler for Parlevliet & Van der Plas, the biggest fish-processing company in Western Europe. The 140-meter-long vessel has large freezer rooms where fish is frozen immediately after it has been caught and cleaned. This means that a freezer trawler can stay longer at sea. After more than twenty years of active service, the original 19A nozzle looked ready to be replaced. The nozzle, which has a diameter of 4,340 mm and a propeller diameter of 4,300 mm, was recently replaced by its exact equivalent at the Damen Shiprepair Amsterdam shipyard. The Maartje Theadora is already back in service again. Complex operation It was a complex operation, according to Kees Oevermans, technical sales manager at Damen Marine Components in Hardinxveld-Giessendam. “The nozzle weighs 18 tonnes, and it’s a challenge to get it exactly in the right position underneath the ship. But everything went well and the end result looks very neat.” The modification was preceded by sound preparation. Says Oevermans: “We want to make it as easy as possible for the customer and the installation yard. That’s why we always stay involved in a project from beginning to end. As soon as the customer gives the assignment, we’ll consult with the yard to find the best and most efficient way to install the nozzle. This way we prevent later unforeseen issues from arising. In the end, this pays off both for the yard and for the customer.” Positive effect A nozzle has a positive effect on the performance of a fishing vessel. A ship that has its nets in the water during fishing, is affected by resistance and needs more thrust. At the lower speeds that the ship maintains while fishing, the nozzle can generate more thrust. Added benefits are reduced fuel consumption and lower CO2 emissions as a result. The Maartje Theadora is not the first modification project of Parlevliet & Van der Plas in which Damen Marine Components is involved. In 2017, the Jan Maria’s nozzle was replaced for this customer, and two years ago, both nozzles on the Margiris were replaced. Oevermans concludes: “A good relationship has developed over the years. We enjoy working together, and all parties are satisfied with the collaboration.” Recent news
