The starting concept behind the Van der Velden® FLEX Tunnel is its ability to retract. With the tunnel embedded into the vessel hull, resistance is lowered and efficiency increased.
When sailing in shallow waters the Van der Velden® FLEX Tunnel is deployed to ensure sufficient water flow to the propellers and maintain their efficiency. Vessels fitted with the retractable tunnel remain operational for longer than other vessels in shallow waters. In addition, it is possible to optimise the hull design so that the cargo space and loading capacity can be increased. Smaller propellers and rudders can be installed, reducing both weight and draught in equal measure.
Another benefit comes from the way the Van der Velden® FLEX Tunnel is mounted on the nozzle: the retractable tunnel is seamlessly constructed over the nozzle, stopping any false air infiltration between the nozzle and tunnel. Moreover, the Van der Velden® FLEX Tunnel is approximately 66% the size of a conventional tunnel, resulting in lower resistance.
Van der Velden offers integrated solutions for the entire on-board propulsion and manoeuvring system. The Van der Velden® FLEX Tunnel is developed to be combined and integrated with the Van der Velden® XR rudders and XR spoilers. This complete package ensures optimal efficiency and considerable fuel savings.
Why Van der Velden® choose the FLEX tunnel:
ApplicationMost suitable for inland vessels of all sizes. The FLEX tunnel performs ideally in deep water, but is also operational for longer periods in very shallow water.
Van der Velden® XR Rudder
The Van der Velden® XR rudder systems are especially developed for optimal propulsion efficiency in combination with first-class manoeuvring characteristics, which comes from a rudder angle of 80°
The accurate and intelligent design of the rudder trunk only requires one grease filling. Its eco-friendly design saves money and reduces the use of lubricants.Read More
Van der Velden® FLEX flanking Rudder
The Van der Velden® FLEX retractable flanking rudder system is an in-house innovation by VDVMS, to bring new efficiency to the inland shipping industry.
The flanking rudder is especially designed to increase water flow to the propellers of the vessels, reduce vessel drag and increase propulsive efficiency.Read More
