Does your inland vessel require 4, 6 or 8 rudders?

3 min

Rudders come in many shapes and sizes. Inland rudders are usually installed in sets of two per propeller. Did you know inland rudder configurations go up to 8 rudders per vessel? While with seagoing ships, it is most common to apply one big rudder.

The number of rudders per ship depend on various factors, such as the number of propellers, water depth, size of the ship, sailing profile, and more. As with inland waterways such as a river or canal, the water depth is limited, while a deep ocean has plenty of water. This is the reason why inland rudders are expanded in width (in numbers) and seagoing rudders in length to still obtain the necessary water flow to remain course.
