54 SQM Rudder for 8800 TEU container vessel

20 December 2012

54 SQM Rudder for 8800 TEU container vessel

3 min

Van der Velden Barkemeyer GmbH delivered a Timon rudder for MSC Athens, a containership built at Sungdong Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering in Korea for Greek company Costamare. The rudder covers an area of approximately 54 SQM, which makes it the largest rudder Van der Velden Marine Systems ever built since her existence almost 50 years ago.

The MSC Athens is the first in a series of 11 vessels to be built at Sungdong shipyard, which will all be equipped with Van der Velden rudders. The 300 metre long eco-friendly vessel has been fitted with the largest Timon flap rudder ever delivered by Van der Velden Barkemeyer.

The 300 metre long eco-friendly vessel MSC Athens has been fitted with the largest Timon flap rudder ever delivered by Van der Velden Barkemeyer. The 54m² rudder is provided with Asymmetric Rudder Technology (ART™). ART™ is a special rudder design that has been developed to improve propeller flow. A special layout modifies the profile above and below the centreline of the propeller in such a way that effects of the rotation of the propeller slipstream are countered. This expands the cavitation-free rudder angle and reduces drag, increasing speed or improving fuel consumption. Reduced rudder cavitation also gives an extended life span to rudders and shaft bearing systems. Low vibration and noise levels are an additional bonus.

Rotary Vane steering gear for largest vessel Jaya Shipbuilding and Engineering

In Singapore, Jaya Shipbuilding and Engineering delivered its largest and most advanced vessel built so far. The 85 metre Jaya Supreme, to be renamed Atlantic Kestrel, was delivered to its Canadian owners, Atlantic Towing Limited, at the end of November. The Jaya Supreme is one of the most sophisticated offshore support vessels ever built in Singapore, and has been equipped with Commander rotary vane steering gear. A key benefit of the rotary vane steering gear is that the rudder angles of up to 2 x 65º give greater flexibility when choosing the design and type of the rudders. Enhanced manoeuvrability and increased control in harbours are the result.
