Recent study of research institute Development Centre for Ship Technology and Transport Systems – DST Duisburg indicates that the 3-rudder system (design 70) still is the most superior system in the inland shipping market on both stability and manoeuvrability. The DST report indicates the 3-rudder system would increase efficiency with 5 % compared to any current 2-rudder system. In January 2018, Damen Marine components completed the study with DST Duisburg in which various rudder profiles and the positions in relation to the propeller were compared.
