Asymmetric Rudder Technology and ESPAC™ for CMA CGM Vessels

4 min

On 30 June 2014, container vessel CMA CGM Danube started its maiden voyage from China. The ship, the first in a series to be delivered to the CMA CGM Group, has a length of 300m and a capacity of 9400 TEU.

She was built at Dalian Shipbuilding in China and has been equipped with Atlantic rudders and ART™ Technology just like nine similar vessels which will be delivered in the near future. The Asymmetric Rudder Technology (ART™) has been developed to improve propeller flow. A special layout allows the effects of the rotation of the propeller’s slipstream to be countered. The reduced drag increases speed and lowers fuel consumption. Other important benefits are the extended lifespan for the rudders and shaft bearing systems and the low vibration and noise levels.

Three other container vessels being built for the CMA CGM Group will be equipped with Espac™ rudders. The 390m long vessels are designed by MARIC (Marine Design & Research Institute of China) and are being built at the Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipyard. The asymmetrical Espac™ rudders have a surface area of 97m². The Espac™ (Energy Saving Package) consists of a propulsion package which is tailor-made to meet customer requirements. MMG and Van der Velden combine the advantages of an optimised propeller and an asymmetric leading edge rudder with a propulsion bulb and adapted hub caps. All vessels will be employed by CMA CGM for the overseas trade between Asia and Europe.
