Toch kunnen deze giganten van de Belgische rederij ook bij lage waterstanden de rivier op, met dank aan een ingenieuze innovatie: het Flex Tunnelsysteem van Damen Marine Components. \u201cTientallen centimeters pure winst in vergelijking met vroeger.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Met een lengte van 135 meter, een breedte van 22,80 meter, een diepgang van 5,50 meter en een laadvermogen van 12.650 ton behoren de XXL-tankers van Somtrans tot de allergrootste binnenvaartschepen. \u201cHet zijn geen kleine jongens inderdaad\u201d, zegt Ben Grootenboer, Fleet Manager bij Somtrans, met gevoel voor understatement.<\/p>\n<p>De Belgische rederij, opgericht in 1975 in Antwerpen, heeft inmiddels drie van deze reuzentankers in de vaart: de Somtrans LNG, Diamant en Briljant. De vierde en laatste uit de serie, de Somtrans Smaragd, wordt momenteel afgebouwd en is naar verwachting begin 2021 gereed om eveneens de rivier op te gaan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Somtrans Leo &amp; Ben<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Alle vier zijn ze uitgerust met een compleet manoeuvreersysteem van Damen Marine Components. Dat bestaat onder meer uit vier vergrote HD-profielroeren waarbij elke set is voorzien van een onafhankelijk werkende stuurmachine type 2DWK, een SP2700-besturingssysteem en een Van der Velden\u00ae Flex Tunnelsysteem. De twee flexibele tunnels in de scheepsromp zijn in- en uitklapbaar en zorgen ervoor dat de tankers met schroefdiameters van maar liefst 2 meter ook bij lagere waterstanden nog kunnen worden ingezet.<\/p>\n<p>Omdat de Flex Tunnels ge\u00efntegreerd zijn in de romp, kunnen ze worden ingetrokken wanneer het schip geladen in de rivier ligt. Het water kan hierdoor onbelemmerd naar de propellers stromen, en het schip ondervindt een stuk minder weerstand bij het bewegen door het water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAls je op laag water met zo\u2019n enorme diepgang wilt varen, heb je op de rivier soms maar 30 centimeter water onder de romp\u201d, verduidelijkt Leo van Zon, Area Sales Manager van DMC. \u201cHierdoor krijgen de propellers te weinig water, gaan ze \u2018lucht happen\u2019 en ontstaat er cavitatie. Gevolg: de performance van het schip zakt in elkaar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Winst<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Door de verbeterde watertoevoer naar de propellers kan een schip tijdens laag water langer operationeel blijven. Ben Grootenboer: \u201cHet is een groot verschil met hoe het hierv\u00f3\u00f3r was. Normaliter hebben onze tankers schroeven van 1,80 meter; met een diepgang van 1,70 meter pakt zo\u2019n schroef dan eigenlijk al te veel lucht. Nu kunnen we zelfs bij 1,40 meter nog met een geladen schip vertrekken. Het gaat echt om enkele tientallen centimeters pure winst in vergelijking met vroeger. Doordat je met een mindere diepgang toch nog schroefwater blijft houden op je stuurwerk, blijf je altijd manoeuvreerbaar. En je gaat ook nog eens vooruit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ook in minder beladen of ongeladen staat zijn er voordelen, legt hij uit. Als een schip hoog in het water ligt, komen de propellers boven het water uit en functioneren ze niet naar behoren. Door de Flex Tunnels in dat geval uit te klappen, wordt de luchttoevoer afgesloten en het water letterlijk naar de propellers gezogen. \u201cDe schroeven krijgen dan veel meer water. Ze doen hun werk daardoor veel beter en je hebt minder toeren nodig om toch dezelfde snelheid te halen en dat is dan weer minder gasolie verbruik.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>De bediening van de Flex Tunnels is ook niet al te ingewikkeld, heeft hij gemerkt. \u201cHet is \u00e9\u00e9n knop! Daarmee kun je de tunnels in- of uitklappen. Simpeler kan niet. Somtrans wilde eenzelfde soort schip bouwen, 135 meter lang en 22,80 meter breed, maar dan met twee in plaats van drie motoren. Om het vermogen van tweemaal 2000 pk effici\u00ebnt over te brengen op het water, werd gekozen voor een zo groot mogelijke schroef. \u201cHet is uiteindelijk een schroef van 2 meter geworden\u201d, aldus Leo van Zon. \u201cMaar wel in combinatie met Flex Tunnels, zodat Somtrans altijd de vaardiepte kan halen van een normale tanker met deze maat. Bijkomend voordeel van de grotere schroeven is dat de roeren konden worden vergroot, wat zorgt voor ultieme manoeuvreerbaarheid. Toch niet geheel onbelangrijk met een schip van dit formaat op de Nederlandse binnenwateren.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hij vergelijkt het met yin en yang. \u201cJe moet altijd een balans zien te vinden tussen koersstabiliteit, zodat het schip mooi rechtuit vaart, en manoeuvreerkracht. De enige manier om zo\u2019n keuze te kunnen maken is met de klant om de tafel te gaan en te vragen: wat is het vaarprofiel? Dat is de crux: onder een auto die Formule 1-races gaat rijden zet je ook geen tractorbanden. Het bepalen van het vaarprofiel kan alleen op basis van vertrouwen, tussen de reder, de ontwerper van het schip en in dit geval DMC.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>De inzet van Flex Tunnels kan ook een aanzienlijke brandstofbesparing opleveren, maar dat verschilt per geval. \u201cHet enige dat we kunnen zeggen is dat Somtrans nu een uitstekend en perfect varend schip heeft voor de manier waarop zij het exploiteren binnen hun businessmodel. Het eerste schip dat we in 2015 van Flex Tunnels hebben voorzien, de Rhenus Duisburg, haalt een rendement van 22 procent. Maar dat schip vaart elke week dezelfde route, in zo\u2019n situatie kun je dus wel een goede vergelijking maken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nieuwbouw<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Het Flex Tunnelsysteem gaat terug tot 2010, toen DMC het concept ontwikkelde in samenwerking met het onderzoeksinstituut DST in Duisburg. Omdat de gehele scheepsromp moet worden ontworpen op de inbouw van de tunnels, is deze innovatie alleen geschikt voor nieuwbouwschepen.<\/p>\n<p>DMC werkt op dit moment mee aan verschillende nieuwe scheepsontwerpen waarin Flex Tunnels worden toegepast. Zeker sinds de lage waterstanden op de Rijn in 2018 is de vraag naar het tunnelsysteem toegenomen, omdat het vervoer van grondstoffen destijds serieus in de problemen kwam. Op de lange termijn zou het weleens zo kunnen zijn dat, met de opwarming van de aarde in gedachten, langere perioden van droogte (en daarmee extreem lage waterstanden) eerder regel dan uitzondering worden.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=&#8221;in_container&#8221; Toch kunnen deze giganten van de Belgische rederij ook bij lage waterstanden de rivier op, met dank aan een ingenieuze innovatie: het Flex Tunnelsysteem van Damen Marine Components. \u201cTientallen centimeters pure winst in vergelijking met vroeger.\u201d Met een lengte van 135 meter, een breedte van 22,80 meter, een diepgang van 5,50 meter en een laadvermogen van 12.650 ton behoren de XXL-tankers van Somtrans tot de allergrootste binnenvaartschepen. \u201cHet zijn geen kleine jongens inderdaad\u201d, zegt Ben Grootenboer, Fleet Manager bij Somtrans, met gevoel voor understatement. De Belgische rederij, opgericht in 1975 in Antwerpen, heeft inmiddels drie van deze reuzentankers in de vaart: de Somtrans LNG, Diamant en Briljant. De vierde en laatste uit de serie, de Somtrans Smaragd, wordt momenteel afgebouwd en is naar verwachting begin 2021 gereed om eveneens de rivier op te gaan. Somtrans Leo &amp; Ben Alle vier zijn ze uitgerust met een compleet manoeuvreersysteem van Damen Marine Components. Dat bestaat onder meer uit vier vergrote HD-profielroeren waarbij elke set is voorzien van een onafhankelijk werkende stuurmachine type 2DWK, een SP2700-besturingssysteem en een Van der Velden\u00ae Flex Tunnelsysteem. De twee flexibele tunnels in de scheepsromp zijn in- en uitklapbaar en zorgen ervoor dat de tankers met schroefdiameters van maar liefst 2 meter ook bij lagere waterstanden nog kunnen worden ingezet. Omdat de Flex Tunnels ge\u00efntegreerd zijn in de romp, kunnen ze worden ingetrokken wanneer het schip geladen in de rivier ligt.
